Diarrhea RealPCR™ Panel (Comprehensive)—Feline
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS: 2627
3 - 5 g (1 g minimum) fresh feces in a sterile container, RTFC (Red Top Fecal Container) preferred; keep refrigerated.
STORAGE AND STABILITY
Fresh Feces up to 10 days at 36° to 46° F (2° to 8° C), keep refrigerated.
TEST COMPONENTS: REFERRED
  • C. Perfringens Alpha Toxin (CPA)
  • C. Perfringens Enterotoxin (CPE)
  • Campylobacter Coli
  • Campylobacter Jejuni
  • Cryptosporidium Spp.
  • Feline Coronavirus (FeCoV)
  • Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV)
  • Giardia Spp.
  • Salmonella Spp.
  • Toxoplasma Gondii
  • Tritrichomonas Blagburni
INTERPRETATION: NEGATIVE
Result indicates that the nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) of that organism(s) was not detected in the sample submitted. However, a negative PCR result may be caused by the number of organisms being below the limit of detection, decreased numbers of organisms following treatment or chronic carrier state, or the occurrence of a new strain variation.
INTERPRETATION: POSITIVE
Result indicates that the nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) of that organism(s) was detected in the fecal sample. In a patient with diarrhea, this supports infection. Vaccination with a modified live coronavirus vaccine may result in a positive result for up to a few weeks post-vaccination. Clostridium perfringens toxin genes (CPA and CPE) positive PCR results should be interpreted based on their quantitative levels. Note that recent or concurrent antibiotic against Clostridium will lower the quantitative levels. In animals with CPA or CPE gene copies > 300 Thous/g feces, the toxin may be contributing to clinical signs of diarrhea. In animals where the number of copies of the gene is below the cut-off, this toxin is unlikely to be contributing to diarrhea.
NOTES
Includes quantification of Clostridium Perfringens Alpha Toxin (CPA) and Clostridium Perfringens Enterotoxin (CPE) genes if PCR positive.
INTERFERENCE
[PCR] poor sample quality / aged sample / recent vaccination with modified live vaccines / recent antimicrobial or antiviral therapy.
DISCLAIMER
The coronavirus test included in this panel is specific to feline enteric coronavirus and does not detect SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent in COVID-19. Feline enteric coronavirus is species-specific and does not infect humans.

STORAGE AND STABILITY
Fresh Feces up to 10 days at 36° to 46° F (2° to 8° C), keep refrigerated.
TEST COMPONENTS: REFERRED
  • Coccidioides Spp.
INTERPRETATION: NEGATIVE
Result indicates that Coccidioides DNA was not detected in the sample submitted and other causes of clinical disease should be investigated. However, a negative PCR result may be caused by the numbers of organisms being below the limit of detection, decreased numbers of organisms following treatment or chronic carrier state, or the occurrence of new strain variations.
INTERPRETATION: POSITIVE

Results reported as no growth, or identification and susceptibility (aerobic only). Most, but not all cultures, will also include minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) with the susceptibility. IDEXX follows the guidelines set by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), formerly the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS), combined with our years of experience in performing susceptibility testing. Susceptibilities will not be performed on normal flora or nonpathogenic organisms. Pathogens with predictable susceptibility patterns, or with no CLSI interpretive standards will be reported with a recommended list of antimicrobials. Examples include β-hemolytic streptococci (beta-strep) and Pasteurella in nonsterile sites. Pathogens that are not suitable for routine susceptibility testing, due to their growth characteristics (i.e. slow-growing, anaerobic) or lack standardized methodology for testing, will be reported with recommended antibiotics. Examples include Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis and Actinomyces spp.

INTERPRETATION: NEGATIVE
[2512] Result supports the absence of an infectious cause by these organisms for the clinical signs. PCR may not detect 100% of the isolates for the tested pathogens in a chronic carrier state, or the occurrence of a new strain variation. [3882] Result indicates that the nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) of that organism(s) was not detected in the sample submitted. However, a negative PCR result may be caused by the number of organisms being below the limit of detection, decreased numbers of organisms following treatment or chronic carrier state, or the occurrence of a new strain variation.
INTERPRETATION: POSITIVE
[2512] Result indicates the detected organism(s) is likely an infectious cause for the clinical signs. Additional causes for the clinical signs should be assessed separately. Vaccination with a modified live vaccine may result in positive results for up to a few weeks post-vaccination. [3882] Result indicates that the nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) of that organism(s) was detected in the fecal sample.
NOTES
Includes quantification of feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) viral particles if PCR positive. Includes strain identification for influenza A virus if PCR positive. Includes quantification of Clostridium Perfringens Alpha Toxin (CPA) and Clostridium Perfringens Enterotoxin (CPE) genes if PCR positive.
INTERFERENCE
[PCR] poor sample quality / aged sample / recent vaccination with modified live vaccines / recent antimicrobial or antiviral therapy. [Fecal O&P] poor sample quality / aged sample / small sample / freezing / non-formalin fixatives / samples contacting ground for >= 30 minutes.
DISCLAIMER
The coronavirus test included in this panel is specific to feline enteric coronavirus and does not detect SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent in COVID-19. Feline enteric coronavirus is species-specific and does not infect humans.

OPTIONAL ADDON TEST: 4011
INTERPRETATION: NEGATIVE
[3556] Result supports the absence of an infectious cause by these organisms for the clinical signs. PCR may not detect 100% of the isolates for the tested pathogens in a chronic carrier state, or the occurrence of a new strain variation. [3577] Result indicates that beta hemolytic Streptococci DNA was not detected in the sample submitted. However, a negative PCR result may be caused by the numbers of organisms being below the limit of detection, decreased numbers of organisms following treatment or chronic carrier state, or the occurrence of a new strain variation.
INTERPRETATION: POSITIVE
[3556] Result indicates the detected organism(s) is likely an infectious cause for the clinical signs. Additional causes for the clinical signs should be assessed separately. Vaccination with a modified live vaccine may result in positive results for up to a few weeks post-vaccination. [3577] Result indicates that DNA from this beta hemolytic Streptococci was detected in the sample submitted. In a patient with clinical signs and histopathology findings, this supports infection. Certain chronic infections may not be the primary cause for the reproductive problems and additional causes should be assessed separately.
INTERPRETATION: CULTURE
NOTES
It is preferred to have fresh placental tissue for testing, but the panel can be run solely on the vaginal swabs with the understanding that the levels of infection may not be as pronounced as inside the placenta.
INTERFERENCE
[PCR] poor sample quality / aged sample / recent vaccination with modified live vaccines / recent antimicrobial or antiviral therapy. [Culture] poor sample quality / aged sample / recent antimicrobial or antiviral therapy / anticoagulants / formalin.

TEST COMPONENTS: MICROBIOLOGY
INTERPRETATION: NEGATIVE
Result supports the absence of an infectious cause by these organisms for the clinical signs. PCR may not detect 100% of the isolates for the tested pathogens in a chronic carrier state, or the occurrence of a new strain variation.
INTERPRETATION: POSITIVE
[3037] Result indicates the detected organism(s) is likely an infectious cause for the clinical signs.
INTERPRETATION: CULTURE
NOTES
If the RealPCR test is positive for Bordetella Bronchiseptica, a culture with susceptibilities on selective media for Bordetella will be automatically performed at no additional charge. Includes quantification of feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) viral particles if PCR positive. Includes influenza A strain identification if PCR positive. Includes quantification of Clostridium Perfringens Alpha Toxin (CPA) and Clostridium Perfringens Enterotoxin (CPE) genes if PCR positive.
INTERFERENCE
[PCR] poor sample quality / aged sample / recent vaccination with modified live vaccines / recent antimicrobial or antiviral therapy. [Culture] poor sample quality / aged sample / recent antimicrobial or antiviral therapy / anticoagulants / formalin.
DISCLAIMER
The coronavirus test included in this panel is specific to feline enteric coronavirus and does not detect SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent in COVID-19. Feline enteric coronavirus is species-specific and does not infect humans.

TEST COMPONENTS: IMMUNOLOGY & SEROLOGY
  • FeCoV Antibody
  • Toxoplasma IgG antibody
INTERPRETATION: CORONAVIRUS ANTIBODY
Positive or negative. Serum titer dilutions begin at 1:100. Positive samples are tested in incremental dilutions to 1:12,800. A positive titer is consistent with exposure to any form of feline coronavirus, but does not confirm the presence of FIP, nor does it indicate that a healthy cat will develop FIP. Titer values may be affected by vaccination, exposure, or disease. Approximately one-third of cats with a positive titer shed coronavirus.
INTERPRETATION: TOXOPLASMA ANTIBODY
The IFA test detects IgG against Toxoplasma gondii. Titers start at 1:25, with positive results being titered to a dilution of 1:12,800. Approximately 30% of dogs and cats in the U.S. have antibodies to T. gondii. A positive titer indicates exposure, but does not confirm infection nor clinical diagnosis. Tentative diagnosis requires demonstration of a high IgM titer (>1:256) or a fourfold (or greater) increase in IgG titer in 2-3 weeks (convalescent titer). Seropositive cats are not likely to be shedding oocysts.
INTERFERENCE
[Serum] EDTA anticoagulant / SST gel / traumatic venipuncture / slow draw / extremes of heat or cold.

TEST COMPONENTS: REFERRED
  • Candidatus Mycoplasma Haemominutum
  • Candidatus Mycoplasma Turicensis
  • Mycoplasma haemofelis
POSITIVE RESULTS
A positive result indicates that the detected hemotropic mycoplasma(s) is present. If present, Mycoplasma haemofelis is likely to be the cause of anemia in this patient. If present, Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis may be the cause of the anemia in this patient, but additional causes should be considered. If present, Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum may be a contributing factor to cause anemia in this patient and other causes of anemia should be investigated.
NEGATIVE RESULTS
A negative result supports that these organisms are most likely not present in this sample and alternative causes for anemia (infectious and others) should be investigated. PCR may not detect 100% of the clinically important hemotropic mycoplasma isolates or levels of organisms may be too low to be detected.
INTERFERENCE
Poor sample quality, aged sample, recent antimicrobial therapy.

  • Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV)
  • Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
  • Mycoplasma Felis (Mhf)
  • Salmonella Spp.
  • Toxoplasma Gondii
POSITIVE RESULTS
A positive Fever of Unknown Origin RealPCR Panel result indicates that DNA or RNA of that organism(s) was detected in the sample submitted. In animals with clinical signs, this supports infection. Zoonotic potential may exist for certain organisms. Vaccination with a modified live vaccine may result in positive results for up to a few weeks post-vaccination. If positive for feline coronavirus (FCoV), the FIP Virus RealPCR Test should be considered to differentiate the virulent feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) biotype from the nonvirulent feline enteric coronavirus (FECV) biotype.
NEGATIVE RESULTS
A negative Fever of Unknown Origin RealPCR Panel result indicates that DNA or RNA of that organism(s) was not detected in the sample submitted. However, a negative PCR result may be caused by the numbers of organisms being below the limit of detection, a decreased number of organisms following treatment or chronic carrier state, or the occurrence of new strain variations. If FIP is suspected, the FIP Virus RealPCR Test (test code 3630) on an appropriate specimen (e.g. peritoneal, pleural or CSF fluid or tissue biopsy or aspirate) could be considered.

INTERPRETATION: NEGATIVE
[2541] Result supports the absence of an infectious cause by these organisms for the clinical signs.
[2541] Result indicates the detected organism(s) is likely an infectious cause for the clinical signs.
NOTES
[Chemistry] Blood film evaluation by technician performed on all specimens for RBC and WBC morphology and parasite screen, pathologist review automatically performed based on established guidelines or unclassified cells are seen. [PCR] Includes quantification of feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) viral particles if PCR positive. Includes strain identification for influenza A virus if PCR positive. Includes quantification of Clostridium Perfringens Alpha Toxin (CPA) and Clostridium Perfringens Enterotoxin (CPE) genes if PCR positive.
INTERFERENCE
[Chemistry] Excess anticoagulant, clotted sample, lipemia, hemolysis, aged samples, traumatic venipuncture, slow draw, large platelets, platelet clumping, extremes of heat or cold. [PCR] Poor sample quality; aged sample; recent vaccination with modified live vaccines; recent antimicrobial therapy. [Fecal O&P] Small sample, aged sample, freezing, non-formalin fixatives, samples contacting ground for >= 30 minutes.
DISCLAIMER
The coronavirus test included in this panel is specific to feline enteric coronavirus and does not detect SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent in COVID-19. Feline enteric coronavirus is species-specific and does not infect humans.
